A Trauma-Informed Path to Holistic Wellness.

Unmanaged stress affects both your body and mind. It impacts thinking, impairs decision-making skills and reduces performance, which can lead to chronic issues. We’re here to help with that.

Why This Matters

It matters because it’s all connected

Constant exposure to high levels of stress has been demonstrated to negatively affect physical and mental health as well as cloud judgment and impair decision-making. All of which seriously compromise performance.  For first-responders and professionals working in the justice system, secondary trauma - the emotional weight that comes from constantly witnessing the pain, fear, and crisis others experience - is an added layer of stress that many are forced to deal with. This type of stress isn’t just draining, over time it can seriously impact well-being.

Recognizing trauma responses - both in ourselves and others - is the first step toward effectively navigating high-stress situations. At Azimuth Unlimited, we provide specialized training for first-responders and professionals in high-impact fields, equipping them with practical, trauma-informed principles that enhance their ability to support individuals in crisis. Our workshops also focus on helping participants better understand their own stress and trauma responses, while introducing proven stress management techniques that build capacity to adapt under pressure. This ability to pivot, problem-solve, and maintain forward momentum - even when situations don’t go as planned - is the foundation of true resilience and the path to holistic wellness.

Stress management

Stress is a normal part of life, however, it’s important to know how to spot the physical, emotional, and mental signs when it is starting to take a toll. Fortunately, there are plenty of simple, research-backed methods to help manage stress responses and boost resilience.

QPR Gatekeeper Program - Recognizing and Responding to Suicide Risk

Public Safety professionals are at much greater risk of suicide than members of the general public, yet it is often a conversation colleagues and supervisors are reluctant to initiate.  Knowing how to recognize the warning signs, engage in supportive conversations, and connect individuals to appropriate care is the key to early intervention.

The neurobiology of trauma

Trauma triggers the brain’s survival mode (fight, flight, freeze) and releases stress hormones that impact body functions, thinking, and emotions. Recovery happens once safety is restored. Recognizing these responses helps maintain safety and prevent reactivation.

Leadership Lessons from Ted Lasso

Leading teams in high-stress public safety environments requires trust, communication, and support. Inspired by Ted Lasso’s people-centered leadership approach, this training equips managers and supervisors with practical strategies to build trust, foster psychological safety, support resilience, navigate critical incidents, and strengthen teamwork and accountability.

Trauma-informed principles

Unfortunately, most people will experience trauma at some point in their lives. While most individuals recover, others may continue to struggle with its effects. Using trauma informed practices, we can create safer, more supportive environments and build stronger communities.

About Me

Heather Pfeifer Ph.D.

My personal experiences with trauma and the criminal justice system led me to pursue my Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice, which I earned from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2000. Immediately afterwards, I joined the faculty at the University of Baltimore where I am now a Full Professor and Executive Director of the School of Criminal Justice. For the past 25 years, I have immersed myself in researching best-practices in trauma-informed practices and applying those principles to developing and facilitating trainings for professionals working with individuals exposed to trauma. They will learn how to manage their own stress responses and facilitate resilience even when working under the most challenging of conditions. My ethos is to help those who help others because if I can lighten the load for one person, I can help heal and strengthen our community.

Testimonials

“I learned new techniques to help me with the stress that your body endures. I’ve kinda forgotten to take care of myself”

“This reminded me to take a step back to remember that what may be routine for a police officer is life changing for a victim.”

“I learned that there are times when officers have to take a moment to think about how our approach could be perceived by the individual or individuals we are assisting and that we may have to tailor our approach to better serve the public.”

“Sometimes people don’t even have the capacity to recognize how much weight they’re carrying around and what they’ve been exposed to.”

“I think it really opened the door for a lot of people to realize that they might have stress responses that they don’t even recognize. I think this topic really opened the communication with me and a fellow deputy about the fact that I did have trauma responses to certain calls.”
